Civil contracting and earthwork specialists
Tauranga and wider Bay of Plenty region

Experts in palisade, concrete and timber retaining walls

When a bank is slipping, steep or supporting a heavily loaded site, the retaining solution needs to match what is happening below the surface, not simply hold back what you can see.

Project Specialists builds engineered retaining walls from approved geotechnical designs, including palisade, concrete and timber systems on sites where access, ground conditions and the scale of the structure make construction more challenging.

On one particular job done by Project Specialists, the solution included concrete piers extending around 12 metres into the ground, followed by a second retaining wall higher up the bank to help stabilise the property above a gully. It was a project other contractors had declined to price.

Project Specialists Ltd - Retaining Wall Construction

Retaining wall construction starts with the engineered design

For most substantial retaining work, the geotechnical engineer assesses the ground, completes the required testing and produces the retaining wall design.

Once that approved design is available, Project Specialists can assess the site, price the construction and build from the engineer's drawings and specifications.

This removes the guesswork from decisions about wall depth, structural requirements and what the ground is capable of supporting.

The team works regularly with geotechnical engineers, including on remedial and insurance-related projects where an engineered retaining solution is required.

Retaining solutions shaped by the site and ground conditions

The right retaining structure depends on the bank, loads, access and engineered design, and many projects use more than one construction method.

Palisade retaining walls use deep concrete piers to stabilise difficult ground. Timber pole retaining walls can also form part of an engineered solution, including upper sections where a tall or stepped bank requires more than one wall.

Concrete elements also require curing time before the next construction stage can begin, so this is factored into the project programme and communicated in advance.

What goes behind the retaining wall matters just as much

A retaining wall is only part of the system holding a bank in place. Drainage, reinforcement and backfill all need to follow the engineered design before they disappear behind the finished structure.

Required stages are inspected as the build progresses, rather than simply covered over and forgotten.

Water management is particularly important. Erosion and sediment controls are also installed where required by the design or council conditions.

Access planned for steep and difficult retaining sites

Steep banks and tight residential sites often make getting machinery into position almost as challenging as building the wall itself. Access is considered before work begins, including where excavators and augers can operate and how materials will reach the construction area.

On established properties, Project Specialists uses measures such as plywood, geotextile fabric and temporary ramps where practical to protect existing lawns, driveways and steps. If damage is likely to be unavoidable, that is discussed before work starts.

For engineered retaining work, a geotechnical engineer generally assesses the ground, completes the required testing and prepares the design. Project Specialists then prices and builds from the approved plans.

Yes. Project Specialists builds engineered palisade retaining walls in Katikati and across the wider Bay of Plenty, including steep and difficult sites.

Yes. Difficult retaining projects are a significant part of the company's experience, including steep sites, unstable banks and heavily engineered retaining systems.

Yes. Depending on the engineered design, retaining projects may use concrete palisade piers, timber poles or a combination of both.
